
He was enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. In addition to his role as The Killing's lead actor He also appeared in two other critically well-known Danish drama series, Those Who Kill, and Borgen III. He also played in episodes of the BBC drama Sherlock as Charles Augustus Magnussen (blackmailer). In the American TV series House of Cards, his role was that of the President of Russia. In 2018, he received an International Emmy Award for his part as the president of Russia in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This was broadcast in the UK as Ride Upon the Storm in 2019. Alongside his native Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English, and he has mastered different accents. According to Mikkelsen's sources that he and his younger brother learned English by studying Monty Python records.
